Which key areas does provenance research focus on?

There are currently four key areas of research in Germany:

1. Cultural assets that were expropriated or looted during the Nazi era. These include items owned by victims of Nazi persecution and spoils of war from the occupied countries,
2. Cultural assets that were seized under duress in the Soviet Occupation Zone or the German Democratic Republic,
3. Cultural assets acquired overseas during colonial rule and
4. Artefacts or human remains whose origin and public display are problematic.
